SHUT UP! STOP Using Network Marketing Lingo When Speaking to Potential Customers?
Every subculture seems to have its own language.
I remember the first time I went to the chiropractor. The Dr. started talking to me about how my C5 was subluxed or something like that. I had no idea what he was talking about. He was using chiropractor language to speak to his patients. I hadn’t sat through all of the classes, conferences or book studies to know what he even meant.
I remember having a friend visit our church. The Pastor started talking about the Old Covenant and the New Covenant and people being Born Again. What does that even mean to a person walking into church for the first time? When they ask people “are you saved?” How is a person who just walked into their first church to even know what any of that means.
I was a musician for years. We talked about our jobs as gigs and referred to sections of the song as bridges and channels and used hand signals to cue the band.
When I entered Network Marketing a few years ago, I was shocked at how freely the culture likes to talk about individual earnings. In the world outside of Network Marketing we don’t refer to each other as 6 figure earners or industry millionaires. We also do tend to throw out such words as enrollment, auto ship, BV. I think it is important when speaking with prospects (there’s another industry word) in plain english.
Enrollment=set up and account
Autoship= your monthly orders
BV=points accumulated by purchase
Be very aware of how often your Network Marketing Sub-Culture language is being thrown out to people who are coming into contact with the industry for the first time. Most people find it off-putting to be hearing income claims and words that sound permanent like ‘enrollment’. Your language could be turning people off to the industry.
Work on having simple conversations with people in a language they would understand and avoid the overuse of inside language and you could very well see your sales increase.
